I recently made my way down to Southern Oregon to visit the vineyard and to work for the first time in our new Vineyard Tasting Room. I have seen with my own eyes before how beautiful the vineyard is in Sams Valley, but this time I was delighted to also see a lush garden, open patio and charming tasting room. These recent additions to Sams Valley Vineyard have made it a welcoming destination in Southern Oregon. Besides enjoying the fantastic wines you can relax on the patio, take in breath taking scenery and perhaps catch a glimpse of some interesting wild life.
I would like to also mention our proximity to Crater Lake. Before this last weekend I had never been fishing in all of my years, nor had I ever visited Crater Lake. This is a tragedy considering how much of my life thus far has been spent in Oregon. I woke up early on Monday morning and acted on a tip from one of the locals that fishing is now allowed in Crater Lake with no limit on size or quantity and no license required. This sounded too good to be true. It is only an hour from the vineyard to the lake where I hiked down a 1.1 mile trail that drops 700 feet in elevation.
Once at the lake I learned to bait (kind of), to cast and to be very patient and still. What a better way to enjoy the lake than to sit and stare out at the shades of blue for hours. I got a little sunburnt, took a dip and eventually caught a 14 inch rainbow trout and two crawfish!
It was an incredible day preceded by a relaxing weekend at the vineyard. A wine tasting tour throughout the upper Rogue topped with a visit to a natural wonder is an end of summer vacation more than worthy of a Sunset Magazine write up.
